Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) / Jaw Pain
Did you know that your jaw, also known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is one of the most often used joints in the human body?
Every time you talk, eat or yawn, you are using your TMJ!
Since the TMJ is a joint just like any other in the human body, it can be treated with physiotherapy.
The most common symptoms related to jaw (TMJ) dysfunction are:
Blocking when opening or closing
Muscle tension that can cause headaches
Clicking or grinding noises when opening your mouth or eating
Loss of mobility
Various ear symptoms such as tinnitus or a blocked ear feeling
Several factors can influence the development of jaw pain or TMJ dysfunction such as the anatomy of the joint and occlusion of the mouth, posture, or under/over-activity of the muscles. The neck region is also closely linked to the TMJ, so it is important to take care of any neck issues as well.
A physiotherapy evaluation can help you reduce your symptoms or resolve your various jaw issues using manual therapy techniques, individualized exercises, and advice on optimal posture and lifestyle changes.
